Understanding Credits and Billing
How credits work, what happens when you run out, and how to monitor your usage
How credits work
Every operation in DocuPipe costs credits based on the number of pages processed. Your plan includes a monthly credit allocation that refreshes each billing cycle:
| Plan | Monthly credits | Overage billing |
|---|---|---|
| Starter (free) | 100 | No |
| Business | 2,500 | Yes |
| Premium | 20,000 | Yes |
| Enterprise | Custom | Yes |
Credit costs per operation
| Operation | Credits per page |
|---|---|
| Document parsing | 1 |
| Standardization (standard effort) | 2 |
| Standardization (high effort) | 4 |
| Analysis | 0.5 |
| Classification | 0.1 |
| Document splitting | 0.2 |
| Document merging | 0.01 |
| Review | 2 |
| Schema creation/improvement | 1 |
Note: parsing credits only apply to page-based formats (PDF, image, Word, HTML). Data formats like CSV, Excel, JSON, text, and XML are not charged for parsing.
Example workflow costs
Different workflows combine multiple operations. Here's what typical workflows cost per page:
| Workflow | Operations | Credits per page |
|---|---|---|
| Parse + Standardize | 1 + 2 | 3 |
| Parse + Classify + Standardize | 1 + 0.1 + 2 | 3.1 |
| Parse + Split + Standardize | 1 + 0.2 + 2 | 3.2 |
| Parse + Split + Classify + Standardize | 1 + 0.2 + 0.1 + 2 | 3.3 |
| Parse + Standardize + Review | 1 + 2 + 2 | 5 |
The most common workflow is parse + standardize at 3 credits per page. For example, a 5-page document costs 5 (parse) + 10 (standardize) = 15 credits total.
Real-world examples
- Invoices - 400 invoices/month, 2 pages each, parse + standardize: 400 x 2 x 3 = 2,400 credits (fits in Business)
- Contracts - 400 contracts/month, 15 pages avg, parse + standardize: 400 x 15 x 3 = 18,000 credits (fits in Premium)
- Mixed document packets - 500 packets/month, 20 pages avg, parse + split + classify + standardize: 500 x 20 x 3.3 = 33,000 credits (fits in Enterprise)
- Medical referrals - 10,000 referrals/month, 80 pages avg, parse + standardize: 10,000 x 80 x 3 = 2,400,000 credits (fits in Enterprise)
What happens when you run out of credits
On Business, Premium, and Enterprise plans, pay-as-you-go overage is enabled by default. When you exceed your monthly credits, processing continues automatically and extra usage is billed per credit on your next invoice. You never hit a wall mid-processing.
If you prefer a hard cap instead, you can toggle overage off from Settings → Billing.
On the Starter plan, processing stops when credits are exhausted. Upgrade to a paid plan to enable overage billing.
Checking your usage
You can monitor your credit usage from the Account Overview section on your dashboard home page. It shows:
- Credits Remaining - how many credits are left in your monthly allocation
- Credits Overage - how many credits you've used beyond your allocation
- Upcoming Invoice - your next invoice amount (base subscription + any overage)
- Next Refresh - when your credits reset with a fresh monthly allocation
For a detailed breakdown of charges and past invoices, go to Settings → Billing.
Need more credits?
If your usage consistently exceeds your plan's monthly allocation, you have a few options:
- Upgrade your plan for a higher monthly credit allocation and a lower per-credit overage rate
- Bulk credit packs - for predictable, high-volume usage, we offer bulk credit purchases at discounted per-credit rates. Contact us to learn more.
